Golf Woods – An introduction to selecting a set of golf woods

All golf club heads used for woods are typically larger with deeper club faces than the blades used on Irons.

The driver or 1-wood has the longest shaft length with least degree of ‘loft’. For drivers, a 10-degree level of loft is normal, although many professionals are now finding themselves using drivers with only 8-degrees of loft – whilst some amateurs prefer to use clubs up to 12-degrees.

A driver should always strike the golf ball farther than any other golf club in the bag – lighter, modern shafts allow for greater weight to be placed in the club head without the need to adjust the overall weight of the club.

Typically used from the tee, an absence of loft and overall design make it a club not useable from the fairway. If used correctly, the driver can be useful to navigate from under the low branches of a tree – when a powerful shot is often required.

The 2-wood is used less by professionals in today’s game due to its shallower club face and higher degree of loft than a driver, with a shorter shaft. The 3-wood has become the basic fairway wood that many amateurs find easier to use off the tee, whereas professionals will select a 3-wood for greater control and accuracy.

Another club to have recently fallen out of favour with professionals is the 4-wood – with many players preferring an iron club with which it possible to hit a golf ball a similar distance, but with greater control. The 5, 6 and 9-woods have gained popularity in recent times in part due to having a shorter shaft and larger head, make playing a medium shot from the fairway look easier – with no requirement to hit down on the golf ball.
