‘Keep it Classic’ Initiative to Preserve Municipal Courses

Successful corporate lawyer Dan Bergman, who is a fanatic for the old-school charm of municipal and public golf courses, has set up a new foundation called ‘Keep it Classic’ to help preserve their existence across America. He adores their eccentricity combined with the “everyone is welcome” attitude to membership. In short, the fact that they are far from idyllic is the crux of their appeal.

Bergman himself has been playing golf since his father began to teach him as a young boy, where their local muni was the notorious Rancho Park Golf Course in LA. It was these experiences which founded his sentimental attachment to this type of course. Now, with a prominent career and a host of contacts, he is attempting to support these traditional golf clubs for future generations; to provide them with the same uncomplicated passion for golf without the social politics associated with the culture in private clubs.

‘Keep it Classic’ aims to preserve and maintain government and public-owned courses by working in conjunction with leading golf architects Mark Fine and Forrest Richardson. The two have agreed to provide an expert analysis of candidate courses in terms of their design and landscape. Aside from guaranteeing their contribution, Bergman’s major task is to search through his contacts for sympathetic beneficiaries to fund the foundation, which has been honoured with status 501(c)(3); in effect rendering it exempt from tax. The funds will be spent on restoration work, raising awareness and, perhaps most importantly, drawing up a series of guidelines to help club managers to maintain their courses effectively.

Also involved in the development phase is the CEO of Landscapes Unlimited, Bill Kubly. His input will be pivotal in the selection of eligible courses. Some of these courses will undergo a full renovation once they have secured the support of key federal officials and been allocated funds from the foundation. All clubs involved will also be given in depth tuition concerning the upkeep of standards as well as enhancing the provisions made for junior golf. Bergman stressed that the project is centred on traditional values and the ethical education of youths.
