Golf Back in the Olympics
Golf appeared in the Olympics many years ago however it is finally making a second appearance in the 2016 games. It has been 112 years since golf was an event and as well as rugby sevens, they have been added to the games.
There was a vote by the International Olympic Committee’s executive board at the Berlin board meeting. Some of the sports which missed out on the opportunity were softball, squash, baseball, karate and roller sports.
Golf last appeared in the games at Paris in 1900. Walter Rutherfold and David Robertson won silver and golf for Great Britain. There has been some debate over the top players and if they will have times in the schedule to play in it. However Tiger Woods has already announced that he will be competing.
The proposed format is for a 72 hole strokeplay competition for men and women with 60 players in each field. The top 15 players in the world will automatically qualify for the tournament and the tournament schedules will be rearranged to prevent clashes.
Jacques Rogge has said that winning an Olympic Gold medal will be one of his main amibitions, above any other majors.
He said, "This is the young generation that will be at its peak in 2016. The same question was raised time and time again when tennis and ice-hockey were introduced.
"Ask [top tennis players] Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, ask the NHL players, ask the NBA basketball players. They all want to go to the games - they are absolutely not concerned about that."
